Bulldogs open year strong at HSU Invite

ABILENE, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs claimed individual titles in women's and men's competitions Saturday at the Hardin-Simmons University Invite in Abilene, Texas.
 
First-year sprinter Jackie Mora won the women's 200 with a time of 26.46. She then finished third in the 100 with a time of 12.78. In the 100, she was third out of 30 sprinters. In the 200, she was the best out of 29 competitors.
 
Zachary Herman won the men's shot put with a toss of 48-03.25. Scottie Reyes was second in the event with a mark of 46-6.75, and Weston Geiger came in third in the shot with a toss of 43-4.25.
 
Troy Stephenson won the men's javelin with his toss of 165-04, and he produced a third-place finish in the pole vault. Stephenson cleared 13-4.50.
 
"For an early-season meet, coming off that week of snow days when we couldn't practice, I feel this was a great opportunity to get back in the competitive mode," said Darlene Holland, TLU's head coach for men's and women's track & field. "It wasn't exactly our top performances ever, but it gives us a benchmark for where we are and for where we need to get to by the end of the season."
 
Reyes finished as the men's discus runner-up with a toss of 152-03, and he was third in the hammer throw.
 
The Bulldogs went first and third in the hammer, with Reyes third and Herman tying for the individual title with a throw of 172-10.
 
Dejah Carr claimed the runner-up spot in the hammer after a toss of 138-11. She tossed the discus 116 feet, 1 inch and placed fourth.
 
The women's 4x100 meter relay team finished second with a time of 50.98.
 
Tia Hart was third in the javelin after a throw of 108-05.
 
Caeli Taylor posted a seventh-place finish (out of 30 runners) in the women's 1500. Taylor crossed the line in 5 minutes, 11.45 seconds.
 
Arrion Knight was fourth in the men's 110 hurdles with a time of 16.10.
 
Dillan Wendel took fifth in the men's 800 with a time of 1:59.69.
 
Ashley Adams and Felicia Ortiz registered finishes of second and third in the women's 400 hurdles.
 
Michael White was second in the high jump with a clearance of 6-02.75.
 
TLU's next meet comes this weekend at the Trinity Invitational on Friday and Saturday in San Antonio.
