Women's Soccer Falls to #7/9 Trinity in SCAC Championship Match, 4-0

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's soccer team competed in the 2022 SCAC Championships on Sunday, as they took on the No. 7/9 Trinity Tigers at Paul McGinlay Soccer Field. The Bulldogs would have thier historic run ended by the Tigers, falling 4-0.

Texas Lutheran (11-8-2) was able to hold Trinity, the sixth highest scoring offense in Division-III entering the SCAC Tournament, scoreless for over 20 minutes before the Tigers finally broke through for their only goal of the first half in the 23rd-minute.

The Tigers poured it on in the second half scoring three goals to put the game out of reach for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs fought to the very end, but couldn't find the back of the net against Division-III women's soccer's best defense.

The Bulldogs were outshot 25-4 in the contest. The Tigers also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Texas Lutheran played all three goalkeepers Sunday afternoon - senior Elena Rivera (New Braunfels/Canyon) was credited with a team-high three saves while allowing one goal.

Following the match, Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/Warren), Ana Parra (San Antonio/Brennan), and Madison Johnson (Pflugerville/Hendrickson) were named to the SCAC All-Tournament team.

The Bulldogs  - a team picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll - conclude the 2022 season with a 11-8-2 record, going 11-3 in the SCAC to claim second place in the conference in the regular season. The 11 conference wins from the 2022 team set a new program record for most conference wins - surpassing the previous record of 10 which was met in 2004 and 2006 while members of the American Southwest Conference. First-Year Head Coach Kerwin Johnson's 11 wins are the most for a first-year head coach in program history. Alyssa Simien became the second Bulldog in program history to be named SCAC Offensive Player of the Year - honoring a season that saw the Texas Woman's University transfer set a new record for goals by a first-year player with 16 goals on the season, overtaking the previous mark of 14 from Casey Rheman in 2003. Simien also finished second all-time with six game winners in a single-season, only trailing Sioned Kirkpatrick's seven game winners in 2015.

The Bulldogs will graduate six seniors -  Elena RiveraLiliana Avila (Blanco/Blanco), Olivia Campos (Austin/Del Valle), Samantha Martinez (Schertz/Clemens), who finishes her career eighth all-time in career assists (12),  Sela Boyers (Schertz/Clemens), and Anna Bourbonnais (The Woodlands/The Woodlands). We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran women's soccer program.
