Volleyball Sweeps Albion to Close Bishop Invitational

DELAWARE, OH -- Texas Lutheran Volleyball picked up its second sweep of the weekend to close out the 2024 Bishop Invitational, taking down Albion, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21, Saturday morning at Branch Rickey Arena on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

The Bulldogs have a big week at home ahead and will turn their attention to hosting No. 11 Trinity on Friday, Sept. 20, at 5 PM and Schreiner on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 12 PM to open SCAC play and to open their 2024 home slate. Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) finished with a team-high 14 kills in addition to seven digs and three aces. Regan Schmidt (Seguin/Seguin) added eight kills on 17 swings.

Victoria Powell (Richmond/Fulshear), Ryann Ely (Montgomery/Concordia Lutheran), and Zaria Solis (Burnet/Burnet) finished with seven kills each with Powell and Solis adding a block each.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) dished out 21 assists to go with 16 digs - both team-highs - for her sixth straight double-double and ninth in ten matches in 2024.

Richelle Guerra (Brownsville/Rivera) added 15 digs while Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) finished with 18 assists and seven digs.

The two teams traded points to start the early morning match with neither team able to create much separation before a 4-1 run from the Bulldogs closed the set for a 25-22 win. Nedd had five kills to lead the Bulldogs.

The second set remained tight with Albion taking a 20-17 late in the second set before the Bulldogs rallied with an 8-3 run for a comeback 25-23 second set win led by five more kills from Nedd.

In the third set, Albion jumped out to a 5-2 lead to start the set. After tying the set 10-10, the Bulldogs would take a 14-11 lead and never look back. The Bulldogs finished off the match with a 25-21 win while hitting .308 in the set. Schmidt and Nedd finished with four kills each in the final set.
