Bulldogs Open Season with Sweep of Birmingham-Southern

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran volleyball team opened the season with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of Birmingham-Southern, a team receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Coaches Poll, in their first of three matches at the Trinity National Invitational held in Trinity's Calgaard Gymnasium in San Antonio.

The Bulldogs hit .252 and held Birmingham-Southern to .052, thanks in part to four blocks. Ryann Ely (Montgomery/Concordia Lutheran) and Victoria Powell (Richmond/Fulshear) had two block assists each. Emily Mixon (Woodville/Woodville) had a team-high 10 kills and a block as the Bulldogs won their third straight season opener.

Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) had seven kills and eight digs while Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) added five kills and a pair of service aces. Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) had 16 assists and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Faith Coldewey (Floresville/Floresville) had a career-high 24 digs and eight assists. Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) added six kills, four digs, and a solo block.

After jumping out to a 16-10 lead, BSC rallied to tie the opening set 18-all before Texas Lutheran would take the first set by closing with a 7-3 run.

After the Panthers would tie the second set 9-9, Texas Lutheran would outscore BSC 16-10 down the stretch.

Texas Lutheran cruised through the third set, 25-15, to complete the sweep led by seven kills from Emily Mixon.
