Texas Lutheran concludes season with five-set loss to Southwestern in SCAC quarterfinal

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Southwestern erased Texas Lutheran's 2-1 set lead and a fourth-set deficit in defeating the Bulldogs 25-18, 21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 15-10 Friday night in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship tournament quarterfinal.

Southwestern, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, advances to next weekend's SCAC semifnal to play No. 2 seed Trinity, a three-set winner Friday over No. 7 seed Schreiner.

TLU's first spring regular-season, played in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, concludes with an overall record of 5-12.

At Southwestern's Corbin Robertson Center, TLU took a 12-6 lead in the fourth set after winning sets two and three.

The Bulldogs jumped out to the six-point lead behind three kills from Hayden Smyers and kills from Tanyse Moehrig, Madison Weisinger, Cailey Young, and Paige Day.

Southwestern rallied to tie the fourth set with six consecutive points. Riley Brantley, Lauren Crabtree and Emma White had successful attacks in the spurt, and Katelyn Whitehead had consecutive aces to tie the set at 12.

Still in the fourth, Southwestern pulled ahead 20-17 before TLU came back to tie the set with a SU service error, an SU attack error and a kill by Day.

The set went to 23-23 before SU closed it out with a kill from Brantley and an attack error on the Bulldogs.
 
TLU hit .163 in the second-set win and .379 in the third-set victory. The Bulldogs had a hitting percentage of .314 in the fourth set and -.091 in the fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Pirates jumped out to leads of 5-1 and 9-4.

The Bulldogs closed within 10-9 and 11-10 on a Moehrig kill and a Pirate error.

The Pirates scored the last four points of the match with a TLU service error, a Brantley kill, and a pair of TLU hitting errors.

Smyers led TLU with 13 kills on 42 attempts and eight errors. She added 16 digs. Day and Weisinger each had 12 kills. Weisinger hit .281 with 12 kills on 32 attempts and three errors.
 
Lexi Morris collected 30 digs, and Weisinger had five blocks and two aces.
 
The quarterfinal match was the final collegiate match for TLU senior Cailey Young, who lettered four seasons with the Bulldogs.
