Track and Field Closes Out Charles Austin Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's track and field team wrapped up the Charles Austin Classic on the campus of Texas State University on Saturday.

Leilani Lopez (San Antonio/St. Anthony Catholic) and Sirena Gomez (Robstown/Banquete) each collected a top ten finish in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.87 and 12.97 seconds respectively to finish in eighth and tenth place. The Texas Lutheran sprinters would finish in ninth and tenth place in the 200m dash.

Kristin Lucero (San Antonio/Brennan) and Caeli Taylor (Tilden/McMullen County) would finish sixth and ninth in the 1500m run with times of 5:13.51 and 5:21.01.

Brenna Iannelli (La Grange/La Grange) ran a season-best 1:08.84 in the 400m hurdles to move into third in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) as of this writing.

In throws, Maya Flax (Port Arthur/Memorial) and Courtney Burnett (San Antonio/Communications Arts) moved into the top 10 in the SCAC in the shot put with marks 10.48m and 9.87m. As of this writing, the Bulldogs reside in seventh and eight place respectively in the conference. Gizelle Gutierrez (Pharr/PSJA North) scaled the SCAC leaderboards to move to seventh in the discus (33.29m) and fifth in the hammer (36.97m) following her marks at the Charles Austin Classic. Freshman Ariana Owens (Edna/Edna) threw a personal best 28.96-meters in the javelin throw to move into fifth overall in the conference in the event.

Coach Holland's Comments: For both the men and women, we treated this meet as a tuneup for the Conference Championships next weekend. We saw a few PRs and are ready for more PRs at conference!
