Freshmen Duo Bennett, Gonzalez Named to All-SCAC Doubles Second Team
SEGUIN, Texas -- The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announced on Thursday that two Bulldogs, freshmen Christa Bennett (Deer Park/Deer Park) and Victoria Gonzalez (Harlingen/Harlingen), from the Texas Lutheran women's tennis team were named to the 2023 All-SCAC Women's Doubles Second Team.
The All-SCAC honors mark the first honors for the freshman duo and for Texas Lutheran women's tennis since 2017 when Alli McClain was named to the All-SCAC Tennis Team and the first honors for TLU since the SCAC moved to honor individuals and doubles teams in 2021.
As a team, the duo went 3-4 on the season earning two wins from the #1 doubles slot against Whitworth University and Sul Ross State and their first win as a team from the #2 doubles slot against East Texas Baptist.
Bennett, a freshman from Deer Park, earned SCAC Doubles Player of the Week this season alongside Elena Brancaleon following an 8-6 doubles win in the #1 slot against Austin College. She finished her freshman season 5-10 in doubles competition, including a three-match win streak against Whitworth and back-to-back doubles wins against Sul Ross State.
Gonzalez, a freshman from Harlingen, finished her freshman season 7-7 in doubles competition with three different partners over the course of the season. During a late stretch in the season, Gonzalez would win five consecutive doubles matches, including two with Bennett.
