Weekend Wrap-up: TLU Women's Tennis shows well at ITA Southwest Regional Championships

ABILENE, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Women's Tennis concluded its fall competition schedule over the weekend with play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southwest Regional Championships, hosted by Hardin-Simmons University.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Enloe (Seguin/Seguin) won the consolation championship in the "C" flight singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Laurel Turco of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.

After dropping her first match in the main draw, Enloe won three consecutive matches to win the consolation "C" championship. She did not drop a set in her three victories.

"Kaitlyn was focused throughout," said John Strahl, TLU's first-year head coach for women's and men's tennis. "She was on a mission. Kaitlyn played well. And in that final of the consolation bracket, she dominated in straight sets."

"As her serve goes, so does Kaitlyn. She often receives back a relatively short return, and then she knows that to do with the short ball."

The Bulldogs played six singles players and fielded three doubles teams at the regional championship.

Samantha Stafford (Rockport/Rockport-Fulton) won her first two matches in the "B" singles draw before falling in the quarterfinal round.

"Samantha has fight," said Strahl. "She is intense and engaged. She's a joy to watch because she is putting forth plausible effort. You see the effort. You don't have to imagine anything. She is putting everything into each shot."

"She has a nice mid-court game, and she has a nice serve. Samantha is a leader on the court."

Strahl was pleased with the Bulldogs focus on tennis for this trip to the regional championships.

"These were players that went up with the idea of representing TLU on a business trip, and the focus was on what took place between the lines," said Strahl. "They as a group were focused on tennis. They talked tennis, and I enjoyed that."

TLU's not turns its attention to the spring team women's tennis season of 2020.

TLU Men's Tennis will play its ITA Southwest Regional Championship matches this weekend in Georgetown, Texas.
