Soccer Preview: vs. Southwestern - SCAC Semifinal

HOUSTON, Texas -- With the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament set to begin with semifinal matchups on Friday, Nov. 3, the Texas Lutheran University women's soccer program will begin its hunt for its first conference championship and NCAA Tournament in program history on Friday when the Bulldogs play the No. 3 seed Southwestern Pirates at 2:30 PM.

Free Kicks:

  • Texas Lutheran is making its 11th all-time appearance in the SCAC Tournament - making the tournament every season since joining the SCAC in 2013. The Bulldogs own a 8-9-2 (.474) overall record in the tournament with four SCAC Championship appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2022). Last season, TLU made a run to the final before falling to top-seeded Trinity, 4-0.
  • With 16 points, Texas Lutheran secured the No. 2 seed for the 2023 SCAC Tournament. It is the second consecutive season the Bulldogs have entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed.
  • Texas Lutheran trails in the all-time series against Southwestern by a 10-17-4 mark. The Bulldogs swept the two regular season matches against the Pirates and won via PKs in the 2022 SCAC Tournament semifinal match a season ago. The Bulldogs have outscored the Pirates 11-8 under head coach Kerwin Johnson and are 0-0-1 against the Pirates at a neutral site venue.
  • Texas Lutheran enters the tournament on a three-match winning streak dating back to a 4-0 victory over Austin College on Oct. 20.
  • Texas Lutheran sophomore forward Klarissa Martinez (Houston/Incarnate Word Academy) enters Friday's match against Southwestern on a three-match point scoring streak and has scored a goal in seven of the Bulldogs last nine matches.
  • The Bulldogs matched the program record set a season ago for conference winning percentage - matching last season's mark of .786 - concluding the regular season 5-1-1 in the SCAC.
  • The Bulldogs enter the SCAC Tournament as the second highest scoring team in the SCAC with the dynamic duo of Alyssa Simien (San Antonio/Warren) and Klarissa Martinez sitting atop of the SCAC in goals, game winners, and points. For the second consecutive season, sophomore Ana Parra (San Antonio/Brennan) leads the SCAC with six assists.
  • Simien is the first Bulldog since Sioned Kirkpatrick in 2012-13 to have back-to-back double digit goal scoring seasons.
  • With one more assist, Ana Parra will enter the top five in program history in assists and with two more goals Alyssa Simien will enter the top five in program history in goals.
  • Texas Lutheran has an all-time record of 3-0-1 on Nov. 3.
