Texas Lutheran Picked Fourth in SCAC Preseason Coaches' Poll
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran women's soccer has been picked to finish fourth overall in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) this season by the league's head coaches, the SCAC office announced Friday.
No. 16 Trinity was voted as the favorite with Southwestern and Dallas joining TLU in the top four. The complete coaches' poll can be found below.
The Bulldogs posted a 6-11 overall record during the 2021 season, including a 3-4 mark in SCAC play. Texas Lutheran returns seven players with double digit starts from last season and brings back the majority of the squad's offensive output, accounting for 9 of 14 goals, 6 of 10 assists and 24 of 38 points scored from last year.
The Bulldogs welcome in a new era this season as Kerwin Johnson takes over the program after Larry Schaffer retired following the 2021 campaign. Coach Johnson has added 11 new players to the 2022 roster and welcomes back four All-SCAC performers from a year ago in Second Team midfielder senior Liliana Avila (Blanco/Blanco) and Honorable Mention honorees senior forward Samantha Martinez (Schertz/Clemens), junior defender Kelly Wolfe (San Antonio/Churchill) and sophomore goalkeeper Charleigh Phipps (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs). Martinez led the Bulldogs with three goals, five assists and 11 points last year. Phipps made 13 starts in net as a first year and finished in the top five in the SCAC in goals-against-average (1.15 – 4th), save percentage (.786 – 4th) and goals against (15 – 5th
