Martinez's goal in 85th minute sends Bulldogs past St. Thomas for 1-0 conference win

SEGUIN, Texas -- Samantha Martinez knocked home a shot off a beautiful pass into the box from Alyssa Reimer that gave Texas Lutheran a 1-0 conference win Friday against the University of St. Thomas (Texas).
 
At TLU's Gustafson Field, Martinez (Schertz/Clemens) scored in the 85th minute, and the TLU defense completed the shutout to deliver the second consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory for the Bulldogs.
 
The Bulldogs improved to 2-2 overall and to 2-1 in the SCAC. St. Thomas dropped to 1-2 overall and to 1-2 in the SCAc
 
A junior forward, Martinez scored her second goal of the 2021 spring season. Friday's goal was her third career goal. For Reimer, also a product of Schertz (clemens), the assist was her first of the season and the second of her career.
 
Abigail Walker made several diving saves to keep the Celts off the scoreboard. The freshman from Longview (Pine Tree) notched her first career shutout and made a career-high eight saves.
 
St. Thomas held a slight edge in total shots, 13-11, and shots on goal were even between the two teams.
 
Carmen Lozada made seven saves in goal for St. Thomas.
 
TLU's next match is a non-conference road contest against NCAA Division II St. Mary's (Texas). Match time is set for 1 p.m. Sunday in San Antonio at St. Mary's Sigma Beta Chi Field.
