TLU's Aubrie Wells named SCAC Character & Community Student-Athlete

SEGUIN, Texas -- Aubrie Wells of Texas Lutheran University, a senior defender on the Bulldog women's soccer team and a native of Houston, has been named this week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character & Community Female Student-Athlete of the Week for the week beginning Feb. 18.

Wells has been heavily involved in the TLU and Seguin communities with her community service work with TLU's Center for Servant Leadership and the service organization Water To Thrive.

"I've been in Water To Thrive since my freshman year," said Wells. "We help raise money to help build (water) wells in other countries, mainly in Africa – Ethiopia, Uganda, places like that. In the (fall) semester, we are doing a lot of promotional things, getting people to know about Water To Thrive."

"It takes $5,000 to build one well, so in the second semester we have a big gala, where we go into town, and we get people to donate money or auction items for the event. We get authentic Ethiopian food for people to eat. You buy a ticket, you can donate, or you can buy auction items. The money we raise from that goes to building a well. TLU collectively has built six wells with the money that have been put toward that."

Wells has worked with the Center for Servant Leadership at the local alternative school as a mentor to middle school and high school students.

"I've worked with them on anything from personality to behavior awareness," said Wells. "I've brought them on tours on TLU to get the college experience, as well as promoted trade schools with them. I would go there twice a week every week and come up with activities to help them think about their behavior and how they can better themselves."

Wells, a senior defender, was a four-year letter-winner for the Bulldogs. She was a four-year starter, playing in 70 career matches and making 69 starts. She was a member of four SCAC Women's Soccer Tournament teams.

"Soccer has been great," said Wells. "Starting from freshman year, I came in knowing that I was going to have to work hard if I wanted to play. I came in shape and worked hard, and I have started all four years, which is really phenomenal."

"I've gotten a lot of close friends from there, and I really learned a lot about myself about being able to manage my time and still play the sport I love, still being able to be competitive. And it helps you to stay in shape, which is really nice."

Wells holds a cumulative grade point average of 3.83. She has been named to the Dean's List seven semesters. She has been a four-time SCAC Academic Honor Roll member. Wells will graduate this may with a bachelor's of science degree in education.
