Summer Swift takes runner-up spot at 2019 TLU Lady Bulldog Fall Classic

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Women's Golf senior Summer Swift (Fentress/San Marcos) forced a two-person playoff at the 2019 TLU Lady Bulldog Fall Classic and ultimately finished as the tournament runner-up after a scorecard playoff Tuesday at Max Starcke Park Municipal Golf Course.

Swift and Karen Alvarez of the University of Texas at Dallas each finished 36 holes of golf with a total of 150, and the two began play on hole No. 1 to decide the winner of the tournament on the course.

Swift and Alvarez each parred the first hole, but play was suspended due to lightning in the area. With the suspension of play, the tournament was decided via a scorecard tiebreaker.

Alvarez was declared the winner of the Lady Bulldog Classic because she scored better than Swift on hole No. 3 on Tuesday. No. 3 is the No. 1 handicap hole - considered the toughest hole on the course. Alvarez birdied the hole, a par-5 for the women, and Swift made par.

Swift led the Bulldogs to a team score of 380 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs finished the tournament with a 739 total. The Bulldogs ended the tourney in ninth place out of 10 teams.

Southwestern won the tournament by 16 shots over UT Dallas. The Pirates and Comets were followed in the final standings by: University of California at Santa Cruz, Trinity, Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, Southwestern "B", LeTourneau, TLU, and University of Dallas.

Swift entered the final round a shot behind Alvarez for the overnight lead. After posting a 74 on Monday, Swift carded a 76 on Tuesday. Alvarez opened with a 73 and closed with a 77.

TLU senior Kaley Martin posted a 34th-place finish, and first-year players Bernadette Barringer and Samantha De La Rosa came home in 41st and 47th, respectively.

The Bulldogs' next competition comes this Sunday and Monday at the McMurry Intercollegiate, held in Hobbs, N.M. at Rockwind Links.
