ABILENE, Texas -- The #RV Texas Lutheran women's basketball team had a five-game win streak come to close following a tough road loss at #RV McMurry as the War Hawks pulled off a 76-69 win over the Bulldogs in Abilene on Friday. TLU goes to 19-4 overall and 13-2 in SCAC play, while McMurry improves to 20-4, 13-2.
It was a tale of two halves as the Bulldogs struggled to get going offensively in the opening half of action. TLU struggled in the first ten minutes of action, shooting 26.7 percent from the floor for ten points in that span. The Bulldogs struggles continued in the second quarter scoring 15 points on 25 percent shooting, but only trailed by five points at halftime as neither team was as effective as they could be in a matchup of two of the top teams in the SCAC. TLU wrapped the half shooting 25.6 percent overall, while McMurry was at 35.7 percent.
Texas Lutheran would keep the game within striking distance for a majority of the second half but was never able to gain the lead while McMurry led by as many as 16 points in the second half. McMurry outrebounded the Bulldogs 41-33, while benefiting from a 24-of-30 free throw effort, ahead of TLU's 9-of-14 conversion from the line. McMurry finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the floor to outpace TLU's 35.6 percent. TLU was tagged with a season-high 26 fouls in the loss.
Angelina Sotelo (San Marcos/San Marcos) and Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led TLU offensively with 17 points each and were joined in double digits by Lauren Sansano's (San Antonio/FEAST) 15 points and 11 points from Zaria Solis (Burnet/Burnet). Solis led the team with seven rebounds while Mulkey and Elexis Morado (Kingsville/Santa Gertrudis Academy) grabbed six each. Mulkey would also dish out a team-high three assists.
Up next, TLU travels to Austin on Sunday, Feb. 23, to take on the Concordia Tornados for their final contest of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 12 PM with the game being streamed on FloSports. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
