SEGUIN, Texas -- Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led Texas Lutheran with 17 points and five assists and the Bulldogs could not overcome a slow start to the second half, falling 76-65 at the hands of rival No.2/3 Trinity on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium. The win moves the Tigers to 16-0, 7-0 SCAC, on the year, while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 8-7, 4-3 SCAC.
Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) scored a career-high nine points and recorded a career-high and team-high three steals off the bench for the Bulldogs. Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) and Sydney Shaw (Lockhart/Lockhart) led the Bulldogs with six rebounds each. The six rebounds mark a career-high for Sansano in her freshman season.
The Bulldogs held Trinity to 38.5% from the floor, but the Tigers were able to capitalize on 30-of-43 free throw attempts (69.8%).
The Bulldogs came out firing, shooting 50% from the field, to play the highly-touted Tigers close but couldn't quite take advantage of the Tigers early shooting struggles to take the lead, trailing 19-17 after the first period. Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O'Connor) led the Bulldogs with five points and two steals in the period.
Trinity pushed the lead to nine points over the course of the second quarter, taking a 36-27 lead into halftime. Trinity would enjoy its largest lead of the game in the third, leading by as many as 19 points in the period, taking a 55-41 lead into the final period.
The Bulldogs fought back in the fourth quarter, shrinking the Tigers lead to four points with 4:58 remaining. Fouls and untimely turnovers would doom the Bulldogs down the stretch in a period that saw them never come closer than four despite outscoring the Tigers 24-21 in the period.
Texas Lutheran is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, welcoming the Schreiner Mountaineers to Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
