SHERMAN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran women's basketball team was knocked out of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament by Colorado College, 55-40, in a semifinal matchup Saturday night at Hughey Gymnasium on the campus of Austin College.
Both teams struggled in the early goings with neither team shooting above 30% in the first half. Despite shooting just 30.1% from the field in the first half, Texas Lutheran would lead for the majority of the first half and carry a 25-20 lead into halftime. Senior Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) would lead the Bulldogs through the first half with six points, four rebounds, and two assists.
The third quarter saw Texas Lutheran struggle from the field as the Bulldogs only managed six points on 1-for-12 shooting. The third would see the momentum swing solely in the direction of the Tigers of Colorado College as the Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 19-6 in the third and would carry an eight-point lead into the fourth after trailing by five at halftime.
The Bulldogs shooting woes continued in the fourth as they failed to cut into the Tigers lead as the Tigers pulled away by holding the Bulldogs to nine points in the final period.
Despite winning the turnover battle, TLU would struggle offensively Saturday night shooting 22.6% from the field and 22.6% from deep for the game and would only tally 11 points off of 16 forced turnovers.
TLU's top offensive contributor was sophomore Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) who registered her fourth double-double of the season tallying team-highs of 10 points and 13 rebounds off the bench for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs - a team picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll - conclude the 2021 season with a 16-9 record, going 13-3 in the SCAC to claim second place in the conference in the regular season. The 13 conference wins from the 2021-22 team set a new program record - surpassing the previous record of 12 which was met in 2013-14, 2016-17, and 2018-19. The Bulldogs will graduate four seniors - Jovanna Adame (Brownsville/Los Fresnos), Jenesis Navarro, Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon), and Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg). We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran women's basketball program.
