Women's Basketball Defeats Schreiner 70-64 After Long Layoff

KERRVILLE, TX -- A career night from Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) that saw the sophomore forward tally 14 points, collect a career-high 15 rebounds, while adding two blocks and a steal to lead Texas Lutheran over Schreiner 70-64 after a lengthy layoff.
The Bulldogs (6-5, 3-0 SCAC) had missed their last three games because of COVID protocols - last taking the floor on December 21st - but were able to collect themselves to hand the Mountaineers (5-8, 2-2 SCAC) their second league loss.
Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) added 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals. Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) joined Moehrig and Mulkey in double-digits adding 11 points. Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) led the Bulldogs with a team-high six assists.
Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon) scored the first five points for the Bulldogs before the Bulldogs jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter.
It was 16-8 after one quarter, 34-27 at the half and 53-52 after three quarters. The Bulldogs were powered by Moehrig throughout the second and third quarters as she registered 12 points and 10 rebounds over that stretch.
The fourth quarter started with a cold streak from both squads as they each went three minutes without a basket. The Mountaineers broke the standoff to take their first lead of the game, 54-53, with 6:48 remaining in the game. The teams would exchange leads before a Jenesis Navarro three followed by a Kailee Mulkey layup gave the Bulldogs a 67-62 lead with 2:05 remaining as the Bulldogs rode that momentum to a close to improve their SCAC record to 3-0 and sweep the season series against Schreiner.
The Bulldogs stingy defense continued to rear its head as they forced 23 turnovers led by four steals from Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O'Connor).
