Texas Lutheran advances to SCAC semifinal round, gives Dixon record-setting victory

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran, the defending champion of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, kept its championship hopes alive Friday with a 73-61 conference tournament win over championship host Schreiner.
 
TLU, the No. 5 seed, improved to 12-14 overall and gave Head Coach Mel Dixon his record-setting 122nd win with the Bulldogs. Dixon moved past Lana Urbanek as the career wins leader in program history.
 
Schreiner, the No. 4 seed, ended its year with a 12-14 overall mark.
 
The Bulldogs will face top seed Trinity in the SCAC semifinal round at 5 p.m. Saturday at Schreiner University. Trinity won both regular-season matchups against the Bulldogs. TLU defeated Trinity in 2019 for the conference title.

Abby Hroch paced the Bulldogs with 23 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. The junior post hit 11 of her 20 shots. Her five blocks was one off her career best.
 
TLU and Schreiner were tied at 58 with 4:43 to play in the, but TLU closed the contest with a 15-3 run.
 
Olivia Balderas started the run, and gave TLU a lead it would not relinquish, with a three-pointer at the 4:24 mark.
 
Morgan Rodriguez and Dominique Campos hit shots over the next two minutes to push the Bulldog lead to seven.
 
Tara Molina, Rodriguez, and Campos all hit free throws in the closing seconds to account for the double-digit win.
 
Balderas scored 11 points off the TLU bench. She hit three three-pointers. Molina and Campos each added 10.
 
Molina dished out six assists and added five steals.
 
TLU shot 43.8 percent from the field and held Schreiner to 37.9 percent.
 
The Bulldogs out-scored Schreiner 11-5 at the free throw line and had a 20-14 lead in assists and turned the ball over three less times than the Mountaineers.
