No. 1 Texas Lutheran Opens Series with Saturday Sweep Over Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas -- No. 1 Texas Lutheran defeated Schreiner 9-0, 5-0 in a doubleheader to open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) play on Saturday at Mountaineer Softball Field in Kerrville, Texas.

Ashlyn Strother (7-0) pitched a complete game with 12 strikeouts, compared to giving up just three hits and no walks. Strother has tallied double-digit strikeouts in four of her last five appearances - leading the SCAC and finding herself in the top ten nationally with 67 on the season.

The Bulldogs (13-3, 2-0 SCAC) jumped on the Mountaineers (5-15, 2-3 SCAC) early scoring six runs in the first inning coasting to a run-rule victory in game one. Laura Hernandez (Missouri City/Ridge Point) brought in four runs with three coming courtesy of a first inning three-run home run.

Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland) opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning before Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) would follow with an RBI single of her own to give the Bulldogs an immediate 2-0 lead in the first. A three-run blast from Hernandez would break the game open in the first as the Bulldogs carried a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the first which was more than enough run support for Strother.

With the Mountaineers backs against the wall and in run-rule territory, the Bulldogs would scratch across three more runs in the sixth inning to secure the 9-0 run-rule victory in six innings.

In game two, Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) continued her dominant start to the season, striking out six in four shutout innings of work. White would go her third straight appearance without allowing a walk and only allow five hits on the afternoon. White currently leads the SCAC with a 0.97 earned run average - only allowing two runs in her last 15 innings pitched across three appearances. Sophomore Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) finished the job, throwing three no-hit innings with two strikeouts earning her first save of the season.

After being held scoreless for the first two innings, Texas Lutheran would scratch across a run in the remaining five innings. Casey Martin would once again get the scoring started with an RBI in the third inning. Freshman Olivia Prinz (Georgetown/Georgetown) would collect her second RBI of the afternoon - scoring Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) to extend the Bulldogs lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning. The Bulldogs would score one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh defeating the Mountaineers, 5-0.

The Bulldogs and Mountaineers are set to conclude their three-game series with game three followed by a Reserve Game tomorrow, March 13. First pitch is scheduled for 1 PM for game three and 3 PM for the Reserve Game. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
