No. 3 TLU Takes Two in Opening Day Series vs. Whitworth

SEGUIN, TX -- No. 3 Texas Lutheran took a pair of games in their Opening Day series at Ed Kruse Stadium on Saturday. The Bulldogs would run-rule the Pirates 9-1 in five innings in game one and won 4-2 in walk off fashion in game two.

Senior All-American Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenahm) started her season by starting a fourth-inning rally for the Bulldogs. Jurden would finish with two hits in her three at-bats and scoring one run. With that stat line, Jurden moved into a tie with Ashley Jacobsen (2012-15) for first all-time in career runs scored (181) and second all-time in hits with Grace Estes (2013-16) in career hits (204).

After a Pirates solo home run put them ahead in the top of the 4th, the Bulldogs responded with a nine-run inning in the bottom of the fourth capped off by a pinch hit three-run home run by Bailey Hudgeons (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs).

In the circle, All-American sophomore Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) collected her first win of the season, striking out seven in 5.0 innings while allowing three hits and one run.

Sophomore pitcher Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) went the distance in game two striking out five and allowing two unearned runs.

Texas Lutheran rode the momentum from game one into game two striking first at the plate as Murphy Williams (Gladewater/Gladewater) put the Bulldogs on the board first - pushing across Kylee Jack (Richwood/Brazoswood) following her double early in the bottom of the first. Jack, a freshman from Richwood, Texas, had an impressive collegiate debut going 6-for-6 with an RBI in her first college series.

Both offenses would remain dormant over the next 3 1/2 innings until Whitworth tied the game 1-1 in the top of the 5th.

Whitworth would take a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. A Murphy Williams double would score Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland) to tie the game 2-all. After freshman Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) would step in to run for Williams, senior Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) stepped to the plate and sent the second pitch of her at-bat over the right field fence for a walk-off home run.

The third-ranked Bulldogs return to Ed Kruse Stadium on Wednesday as they meet Division-II St. Mary's University at 4 and 6 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
