Texas Lutheran holds TAMU-San Antonio to three hits in doubleheader sweep

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs held Texas A&M-San Antonio to a combined three hits in a doubleheader sweep Wednesday at TLU's Ed Kruse Stadium (Morck Softball Field).
 
TLU won 8-0 in the first game and 6-0 in the second contest.
 
The Bulldogs improved to 11-4 overall with the non-conference victories. TLU is a member of the NCAA Division III and the 2019 NCAA DIII National Champions.
 
Texas A&M-San Antonio is a first-year softball program. The Jaguars are members of the NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference. The Jaguars are now 5-8 overall.
 
In the early game, Haley Padilla (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) tied the TLU career record for home runs when she hit a walk-off homer in the fifth. The blast to right field, her 16th career home run, put TLU in front 8-0 and ended the game via the run rule.
 
Padilla tied former Bulldog Heather Hummel for the career home run lead. Hummel hit 16 for the Bulldogs from 2014 to 2016.
 
Bulldog right-hander Ashlyn Strother (Seabrook/Clear Falls) tossed a one-hit shutout to improve to 5-1. She struck out eight and allowed only a first-inning single to the Jaguars. Strother did not walk a batter.
 
Rebecca Snow (Tomball/Klein Oak) doubled twice and drove in three. Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland) knocked in three runs in the Bulldogs' four-run second inning. Martin doubled with the bases loaded and cleared the bases.
 
Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
 
In the late game, Sydney Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) hurled a two-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked one. Ouellette improved to 5-2 overall.
 
Sarah Metzer (Sugar Land/Dulles) doubled and went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Snow doubled and drove in a run, and McKay Bloxham (Katy/Katy) and Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) also had RBI.
 
TLU returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action this Friday and Saturday in Sherman, Texas. The Bulldogs face Austin College for a 6 p.m. doubleheader Friday and an 11 a.m. single game Saturday.
