Cura Leads Bulldogs to Fifth-Place at SCAC Championships

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- Sophomore Carlos Cura (Midkiff/Rankin) led the Texas Lutheran men's cross country team to a fifth-place finish at the 2022 SCAC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29 in Georgetown, Texas.

The men finished with a score of 126. Colorado College was the top team on both the men's and women's side with 31 and 15 points respectively.

Cura was the first Bulldog to cross the finish line in 17th place with a time of 26:55.20. This marks the fifth time this season he has been the top finisher for the Bulldogs. Freshman Lucas Falcon (Victoria/Victoria East) followed Cura in the finish shoot taking the 30th spot with a time of 27:26.80. Falcon was followed by freshmen Cole Schuetz (Corpus Christi/London) (33rd, 27:41.40) and Isiaiah Arriaga (Sugar Land/Dulles) (52nd, 28:41.20), senior Kevin Vazquez-Arredondo (Austin/Del Valle) (58th, 29:39.00) rounded out the top five Bulldogs in the men's race.

Coach Holland's comments: "When you look at the scores on the men's side, what you don't see are the other teams in our conference that we also beat because they didn't have a full squad or even field a team. There are 8 teams in the SCAC that sponsor Cross Country as a sport; we finished fifth. I am proud of that finish. We continue to grow in numbers each year. Our top 7 did not have even one senior on the team. We were led by Carlos - a sophomore - and Lucas - a freshman. Following solidly behind our front runners were two more freshmen - Cole and Isaiah. Fifth was Kevin who is a junior, sixth and seventh both are freshmen with Gabe and Jude rounding it out. We have a very young team and when you are talking about the 8K (5 mile) distance, maturity and experience is key in the big jump in race distance from high school. They worked hard and got a feel for college race distance this year. Watch them for future greatness!

Carlos will go on to represent TLU at the NCAA West Regional Championships in two weeks. I'm looking forward to seeing him compete well against some of the top runners in Division-III."

Carlos Cura will continue his season individually representing Texas Lutheran men's cross country at the Division-III NCAA West Regional at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, on November 12.
