Track and Field Concludes Last Chance Meets in California

REDLANDS, CA -- Texas Lutheran men's track and field concluded their string of last chance meets by competing in the Redlands Final Qualifier in Redlands, California with a small contingent of Bulldogs that have qualified or were on the bubble of qualifying for the Division-III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Scottie Reyes (Dilley/Dilley) was the lone competitor on Wednesday - winning the discus throw with a toss of 46.30-meters.

Reyes would follow-up on Thursday by winning the shot put with a 15.89m mark. Zachary Herman (Austin/Lake Travis) would finish in third place at 14.05-meters.

Both throwers are firmly amongst the field of qualifiers for the NCAA Championships field that will be announced on Friday, May 20.

Gerrit Twitero (McQueeney/Seguin), after setting a new school record in the men's high jump last week, finished second in the high jump on Thursday.

The Texas Lutheran men's 4x100m relay team comprised of: Elijah Jefferson (San Antonio/Construction Careers Academy), Wyatt Wilson (New Braunfels/New Braunfels), Bryce Powell-Chimene (Dayton/Dayton), and Ezrael Powell (San Antonio/Marshall), which entered the meet ranked 31st in the country, finished in third-place with a time of 41.57 seconds.

Coach Holland's Comments: "We had hoped for some better performances out here in California, but we fell short of what we needed to qualify some events for the NCAA Championships.

First, let me congratulate both Scottie Reyes and Zach Herman for qualifying for the championships. They worked hard in their throwing events and they held on to get in. Both in the shot put, plus Scottie also in the discus.

We also were on the bubble for Gerrit Twitero in the high jump and then men's 4x100 relay.

Gerrit started off the day for us with a seemingly effortless clearance at 1.92 meters on his first attempt. He then passed 1.97 and 2.02 heights to ensure he had all three attempts at 2.05 which would have secured him a spot at NCAAs. He had very solid jumps but no clearance at 2.05.

The men's 4x100 hit the track with hopes of an improvement on time, but fell short when senior anchor Ezrael Powell was impeded by the arm of the team to their outside. The person's arm hit his torso and then his arm as he was trying to accelerate out of the exchange. Up until that time TLU was neck and neck with both teams in the race and was coming down to the sprint of each team's anchors. TLU had already made their exchange when he was hit by the other runner's arm.

This year we saw a lot of great performances from athletes on both our men's and women's teams. I'm extremely proud of how hard everyone worked and their accomplishments. We return most of our team for next year, so there are big expectations. We have NCAAs next week to close the chapter on the 2022 season and I am very excited to see how we do!"
