Reyes claims 14th-place finish at NCAA DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Texas Lutheran second-year freshman Scottie Reyes (Dilley/Dilley) finished 14th Thursday at the men's discus at the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Reyes' best toss of the day came on his third attempt. His mark of 43.79 meters (143 feet, 8 inches).
Reyes qualified 13th out of the 17 men's discus student-athletes that are scheduled to compete at the national championships. Reyes' qualifying mark of 50.17 meters (164 feet, 7 inches) is a Texas Lutheran Men's Track & Field record. Reyes is the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion in the discus.
The national championship meet is held at the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
Reyes is in his second year at TLU, but he has freshman eligibility because the 2020 outdoor track & field season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reyes was one of three freshmen in the 17-man field. He did finish as the top freshman in the field. Ian Bain of Rowan was 15th, and Joseph White of Carthage was 17th.
Steven Hermsen, a sophomore from Carroll (Wis.), won the national championship with a toss of 177-11. He was the top qualifier entering the championship.
Reyes was TLU's first student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA DIII national meet in the men's discus. TLU has had three qualifiers in women's discus for the national meet.
