Texas Lutheran's Scottie Reyes qualifies for NCAA DIII national meet in men's discus

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran second-year freshman Scottie Reyes (Dilley/Dilley) will compete for a national championship and All-America honors in the men's discus at the 2021 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Reyes qualified 13th out of the 17 men's discus student-athletes that are scheduled to compete at the national championships. Reyes' qualifying mark of 50.17 meters (164 feet, 7 inches) is a Texas Lutheran Men's Track & Field record. Reyes is the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion in the discus.

The national championship meet will be held May 27-29 at the Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C. The complete list of qualifiers is available on the following website: https://tf.deltatiming.com/ncaa/2021-ncaa-d3-outdoor-championships. The meet schedule can be found here.

Reyes will compete on Thursday, May 27 at 11 a.m. eastern (10 a.m. central). The discus event has a preliminary round and a finals round. The rounds are held back-to-back on Thursday. The top eight finishers receive All-America honors.

The national championships will have a live web stream for each day of the championships. The live stream will be available on ncaa.com.

Reyes is in his second year at TLU, but he has freshman eligibility because the 2020 outdoor track & field season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reyes is one of three freshmen in the 17-man field. Steve Hermsen, a sophomore from Carroll (Wis.), is the top qualifier after a season-best toss of 57.20 (187-8).

Reyes is TLU's first student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA DIII national meet in the men's discus. TLU has had three qualifiers in women's discus for the national meet.

"Scottie is the kind of kid that every coach wants," said Ben Wolf, TLU's throws coach. "He shows up ready to practice every day. He shows up to multiple practices a day, and he is always willing to get better. It doesn't surprise me that he made nationals in his first outdoor season as a college thrower."
