Texas Lutheran's Luis Green, Mitchell Long named Academic All-Americans®
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer players Mitchell Long (Round Rock/Round Rock) and Luis Green (Monterrey, Mexico/Smithson Valley (Texas)) are the 46th and 47th Academic All-Americans in school history after being named Wednesday to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Team for NCAA Division III Men's Soccer.
Long and Green made TLU just one of five colleges or universities in NCAA DIII to have more than one Men's Soccer Academic All-America® selection this year. TLU joined the University of Chicago, Rose-Hulman, Johns Hopkins, and Westminster as schools with more than one student-athlete on the team.
Long, a May 2021 graduate of TLU, finished his undergraduate degree with a 4.0 grade point average in kinesiology (exercise science). He was one of four members of the Academic All-America® Team to have a 4.0 GPA.
A four-year letterman for TLU Men's Soccer as a defender, Long is on the Academic All-America® Team for the second time. He was named a First Team Academic All-American after being named to the Third Team in 2019. He was one of five members of the 2019 team to repeat as a member on this year's team.
The 11-member men’s First Team has a 3.89 average GPA with the total team posting a 3.85.
Long is one of just 13 TLU Bulldogs to achieve a First Team Academic All-America honor, and he is one of just 14 Bulldogs to obtain at least two Academic All-America® honors.
A three-year starter for the Bulldogs, Long played on four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship tournament-qualifying teams and on the 2019 SCAC Championship squad that advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship (first round).
Long was the 2019-20 TLU Junior Year Male Student-Athlete of the Year and the 2020-21 TLU Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Green is an Academic All-American® for the first time. He was named to the Second Team. He is one of just 14 Bulldogs to be named Second Team Academic All-America®.
Green holds a 3.48 GPA as a business finance major.
A junior academically and a forward on the field, Green is the three-time SCAC Offensive Player of the Year and a playing All-American. He was the 2020-21 TLU Male Student-Athlete of the Year.
Playing in just nine matches in 2021 (because of the shortened season due to COVID-19), Green led the SCAC in points (26), goals (11), points-per-game (2.89), goals-per-game (1.22), game-winning goals (3), and shots on goal (21). He finished third in the league in assists, with four.
A two-time SCAC Offensive Player of the Week during the season, Green tied a TLU men's soccer record for goals scored in a match with four in the Bulldogs' 5-1 conference road win over Schreiner on March 27.
Historically, Green's 1.22 goals-per-game is the sixth-best single-season performance in conference history and the highest since 1996. Green's 2.89 points-per-game ranks third-best all-time in SCAC history, trailing only Oglethorpe's Will Lukow's seasons of 3.26 and 3.00 PPG back in 1992 and 1991.
This year, Green became the first player in SCAC history to lead the league three straight seasons in points, points-per-game, and goals-per-game. He is also just the second athlete in SCAC history to lead the league in goals scored for three straight seasons, joining Trinity's Josh Card, who accomplished the feat from 2000-2002.
Through three seasons, Green has 49 goals in 48 games played for an SCAC all-time best 1.02 goals-per-game. His current career 2.23 points-per-game ranks second all-time in league history.
