St. Thomas advances on penalty kicks against Texas Lutheran in SCAC quarterfinal

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The University of St. Thomas ended Texas Lutheran's hold on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship by advancing on penalty kicks Friday in the tournament quarterfinal round at Centenary College's Mayo Field
 
The teams tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and played two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods before heading to PKs.
 
In penalty kicks, the Celts converted all three of their penalty kicks. TLU missed on three of its four PKs. The match goes down as a draw with St. Thomas advancing on PKs.
 
St. Thomas, the No. 5 seed, moves to the semifinal round to play top-seed Trinity in an 11 a.m. Saturday semifinal. St. Thomas now has an overall record of 4-2-4.
 
TLU's season, shortened and moved to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic, ends at 5-3-1. The Bulldogs were the defending SCAC champions, having won the 2019 SCAC Championship and advancing to the 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship (first round).
 
In Friday's quarterfinal, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead on St. Thomas after goals from Nicolas Medina (19:44) and Luis Green (56:05). Green assisted on the Medina goal, and Santiago Quinonez assisted on the second.
 
For Green, the goal was his 11th of the season (in nine matches) and the 49th of his career (48 matches).
 
St. Thomas countered with goals in the 72nd and 82nd minutes from Dany Ramirez (penalty kick) and Gabe Salako, respectively.
 
The Celts out-shot TLU 28-11 and led in shots on goal, 13-6. Caleb Weed made 11 saves in goal for TLU.
 
In the penalty kick session, Tom Hultsch, Andres Marquez, and Ramirez all put away their shots. Jorge Ugaz was the lone Bulldog to make his PK.
 
St. Thomas won PKs, 3-1.
