Men's Soccer named TLU's Team Community Service award winner for third time in seven years

SEGUIN, Texas -- For the third time in seven years, Texas Lutheran Men's Soccer has been named the TLU Athletics Team Community Service Award winner.

Men's Soccer's award for the 2019-20 academic year goes with the community service awards the team received in 2016-17 and in 2013-14.

The TLU Athletics Team Community Service Award is presented and determined by TLU's Jon & Sandra Moline Center for Servant Leadership.

"The community service award this year goes to the Men's Soccer Team due to their long-term relationship with My Father's Farm and with Rodriguez Elementary," said Morgan Klaser, the director of the Jon & Sandra Moline Center for Servant Leadership. "Although we weren't able to have them tutor at Rodriguez this semester due to the Coronavirus, I was impressed by (Coach Eddie Salazar) and the students' diligence to stay in relationship with their partner school."

The Team Community Service Award for TLU Men's Soccer comes in the same athletics year in which the Bulldogs won a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Bulldogs won the 2019 SCAC Men's Soccer title in early November and advanced to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship (first round) for just the second time in school history.

The TLU Athletics Community Service Award is presented annually to a TLU Athletics team or teams for outstanding community service work in the Seguin community. The award usually is presented at the annual TLU Athletics Awards Program.

The 2019-20 TLU Athletics Awards Program was postponed until Aug. 1, the day of TLU's spring graduation ceremony. The awards program is scheduled for 1 p.m. that Saturday in TLU's Wupperman Little Theatre.

On Aug. 1 at the awards program, TLU Athletics will present Senior Watches to graduating seniors and hand-out major awards to student-athletes. Major awards for junior-year scholar-athletes, senior-year scholar-athletes, and individual sportsmanship already have been announced.

Softball's Kelly Jurden and Men's Soccer's Mitchell Long were the Junior-Year Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Softball's DeAnna Hernandez and Men's Tennis' Alex Talley were named the Christiansen Award winners (for Senior-Year Scholar-Athletes of the Year).

Manny Longoria of Football and Summer Swift of Women's Golf were named Sportsmanship Student-Athletes of the Year.

The annual awards for TLU Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year will not be presented for 2019-20 because the athletics seasons were not fully completed.
