Texas Lutheran Swats Yellow Jackets, 95-79

SEGUIN, Texas -- Mason Wallace (San Antonio/Judson) recorded his first career double-double and Teddy Tapken (Austin/Lake Travis) added a double-double of his own as the Texas Lutheran men's basketball team beat the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets, 95-79, at Memorial Gymnasium Saturday night.

The Bulldogs (1-1) had five players in double figures, led by Wallace, who secured a double-double with 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Wallace would record 10 points and six rebounds in the second half alone. Teddy Tapken tacked on 15 points on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting, six assists, and a career-high 14 rebounds and Trey Blackmore (San Antonio/Cole) chipped in with 17 points. Kris Jones (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) matched his career-high with four made threes, finishing with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc while Easton Allen (New Braunfels/Marion) added ten points.

Texas Lutheran collected 54 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Howard Payne's 25, led by Tapken's fourteen. The Bulldogs put in work on the offensive glass, turning 13 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points.

The two teams went back and forth trading leads in the first half as the first half saw ten lead changes in a half that saw TLU take a 48-34 lead into halftime. The Bulldogs would close the half on a 17-6 run to stretch out to their halftime lead.

Texas Lutheran came out in the second half not only shooting better, but taking advantage of opportunities at the free throw line - shooting 16-of-18 from the line in the second half. The Bulldogs cruised the rest of the way, leading by as many as 19 points in the second half. The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 51.7% (31-of-60) and made 9-of-25 three-pointers (36%).

Texas Lutheran will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 16, as they travel to Belton, to face Mary Hardin-Baylor in their final game before their California road trip. Tip-off is set for 6 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
