SEGUIN, TX -- Sul Ross State broke open a tight contest with a decisive 9-1 run to start the second half to pull away from Texas Lutheran Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action that saw the Bulldogs fall to the Lobos of Sul Ross State, 58-51, at Memorial Gymnasium.
Texas Lutheran moves to 1-4 while Sul Ross State improves to 3-2 on the season.
On an afternoon that saw the Lobos shoot 25-of-57 (43.9%), the Bulldogs couldn't find any offensive rhythm, connecting on just 36.8% (21-of-57) from the field, including 18.2% (4-of-22) from three-point range. The Bulldogs won the turnover battle forcing 21 turnovers compared to the Lobos 16, but the Bulldogs struggled on the boards as they were outrebounded 43-28 - allowing 14 second chance points.
Despite shooting 35.7% from the field in the first half, the Bulldogs closed the half with a 6-0 run to bring their halftime deficit to four. The Bulldogs increased their shooting percentage to 37.9% in the second half, but it wasn't enough for the Bulldogs to overtake the Lobos as the Bulldogs could only come within three points - never leading in the second half.
Freshman Isaac Orozco (Helotes/O'Connor) had a career day, registering a career-high in points (14) on 5-of-8 shooting and steals (5) - both team highs in 32 minutes. He was joined in double figures by Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas High), Jamir Mason (Pearland/St. Thomas Episcopal), and Avery Theus (San Antonio/Brandeis) - all finishing with 10 points. The quartet combined for 44 of the Bulldogs 51 points, as the rest of the team managed just seven points on 3-of-15 shooting, including 0-7 from deep. Bulldogs forward Garrett Prince (San Antonio/MacArthur) pulled down a game-high 7 rebounds.
Up next, the Bulldogs will enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action Monday against the Tornadoes of Concordia University (TX) at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 PM. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
