Texas Lutheran powers past St. Thomas for 64-55 conference home victory

SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs rebounded from Friday's home loss to St. Thomas (Texas), controlled Saturday's game from early in the first half, and collected a 64-55 conference home win in Memorial Gymnasium.
 
The Bulldogs snapped a two-game skid and improved to 3-5 overall and to 3-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
 
St. Thomas fell to 7-3 overall and to 7-3 in the SCAC.
 
The Celts led 6-5 with 17:40 to play in the first half, but they never led again after the Bulldogs gained the advantage moments later with a Caleb Lister jumper.
 
The Bulldogs led 36-21 at the break, using a 25-11 run over the final 14 minutes of the first half to open the lead.
 
TLU produced its largest lead of the day, 18, early in the second half after a Garrett Prince three-pointer.
 
The Celts moved within seven with 2:10 remaining, but the Bulldogs made six consecutive free throws in the closing moments to prevent the St. Thomas comeback.
 
Lister, a senior forward, scored 22 and was 8-for-9 at the free throw line. Senior guard Sebastian Andrade added 10 points, three rebounds, and three steals.
 
Bulldog senior point guard Jamir Mason played all but 42 seconds of the game. Mason pulled down nine rebounds, dished out five assists, and added two steals. He scored three.
 
Prince, a freshman post, chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. DJ Ardoin, a freshman guard, contributed nine points in 10 minutes of action.
 
TLU made 24 of its 28 total free throw attempts (85.7 percent). The Bulldogs shot 36.4 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from the arc.
 
The Bulldogs had a 24-9 edge in points scored beyond the arc.
 
St. Thomas finished the afternoon at 36.5 percent from the field and 14.3 percent from the three-point line. The Celts were 3-for-21 from long range.
 
Joshua Sanchez led the Celts with 16 points and three steals. Juan Hood and Adam Kanafani added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
 
The Bulldogs travel to Kerrville, Texas next Friday and Saturday for a pair of conference games against Schreiner University. Friday's game is set for an 8 p.m. start. Saturday's contest is scheduled for a 4 p.m. tip.
