Texas Lutheran erases 17-point, 2nd-half deficit to stun Southwestern 84-79 in overtime

GEORGETOWN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs erased a 17-point, second-half deficit and stunned Southwestern 84-79 in overtime Friday night at the Pirates' Robertson Center.
 
Bulldog senior guard Jamir Mason hit a driving layup with four seconds to play in regulation to send the game into the extra session.
 
Mason and first-year guard Xavier Phillips each made two free throws in the closing five seconds of overtime to seal the victory.
 
The Bulldogs improved to 2-3 overall and to 2-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
 
Southwestern fell to 3-2 overall and to 3-2 in the SCAC.
 
Bulldog senior guard Sebastian Andrade played 40 minutes and scored 27 points. He hit 10 of his 16 shots and six of his eight free throws before fouling out late in the overtime period.
 
Andrade scored six of the Bulldogs' 14 points in the extra session. He had 19 points in the second half and OT combined.
 
Phillips scored a career-high 18 off the TLU bench. He made five of his eight shots and scored 16 of his 18 after the first half.
 
Senior forward Caleb Lister added 15, with 11 of his points coming in the second half and OT. He also grabbed 13 rebounds.
 
Lister hit a long step-back jumper with the shot clock winding down and only 53 seconds remaining in the overtime. His shot gave TLU a 78-75 advantage.
 
TLU had a three-point lead with seven seconds to play in OT, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over and gave up a layup and a foul to Chris Smith. With a chance to tie the game, Smith missed the free throw.
 
TLU grabbed the rebound. Southwestern fouled, and Phillips sanks two free throws for a three-point edge.
 
A last-second Southwestern three-point attempt and another foul led Mason to the line once again. He iced the game with two final free throws.
 
In the second half, TLU made 46.9 percent of its shots and hit 14 of its 17 free throw attempts.
 
After shooting 53.3 percent in the first half, Southwestern cooled to 37.0 percent in the second half and to 33.3 percent in the overtime.
 
Southwestern went a combined 0-for-11 from the three-point line in the second half and OT.
 
The Pirates were 2-for-18 from the arc for the game.
 
The Bulldogs and Pirates play again Saturday. Tip-off in the Robertson Center is set for 4 p.m.
