Jamir Mason named SCAC Male Character & Community Student-Athlete of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Men's Basketball stand-out Jamir Mason (Pearland/St. Thomas Episcopal) has been named this week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Male Character & Community Student-Athlete of the Week.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics and also serve their campus and community.

Mason, a junior shooting guard from Pearland, Texas, is a starter for the Bulldogs and is a big reason the team sits in the No. 1-seed position for the upcoming SCAC Championship tournament with six regular-season conference games to play.

Mason is also one of the men's basketball team's representative on the TLU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

With the TLU SAAC, Mason worked to collect coats and other winter clothing for citizens in Seguin and the surrounding area. Mason also was instrumental in helping with SAAC's community Halloween celebration efforts for Seguin-area kids.

"For the pantry, we've been collecting jackets, coats, blankets," said Mason. "There is a place in Seguin, on Court Street, where you can take a coat if you need it or leave a coat if you want to help somebody out. We've been gathering stuff together to get that situated."

Mason also has volunteer hours at Seguin Independent School District's Jefferson Elementary. Mason has mentored third-grade students at the campus.

"We get to go out into the community and take care of everybody," said Mason. "That's how I see it."

Mason has gone from an important reserve on the defending conference champions to one of the team's most-trusted producers - on both the offensive and defensive ends of the court.

Mason averages a career-best nine points per game this season, and he has career-high shooting percentages for overall shooting (44.9 percent) and for three-point shooting (47.2 percent).

Mason entered the 2019-20 season as a career 1-for-15 shooter from the three-point line. This year, he has become a three-point threat. He has hit 17 threes in 36 total attempts from the arc.

"Jamir has worked extremely hard to be a better player, a better shooter, a better defender, and a better teammate," said Mike Wacker, TLU's head coach for men's basketball. "He's become a leader on the floor for us as well as a leader off the floor, as he supports his teammates and coaches in our community service efforts and as he works with TLU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee."

"Jamir's success is what you wish for every student-athlete. He has persevered and thrived, and now he is enjoying the fruits of his hard work in a whole variety of areas. We are so proud to have him, and so thankful that he is one of us."

Mason is a kinesiology major with a sports management emphasis. He is scheduled to graduate in May 2021.
