Texas Lutheran secures 71-64 road win at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs snapped a two-game conference losing skid in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with an important 71-64 league road win Saturday at Schreiner University.

The Bulldogs rallied from a 34-28 halftime deficit to out-score Schreiner 43-30 in the second half.

The Bulldogs fell behind by seven in the second half before going on a 12-2 run that turned a 29-32 deficit into a 44-41 lead. Caleb Lister had four points in the run, and Sebastian Andrade and Jorden Kite each hit three-pointers.

Schreiner would take a 56-55 lead with 6:25 remaining in the game, but Bulldog freshman Trystin Silas made a three with 5:42 to play to put TLU back in front. The Bulldogs would not trail again.

The win keeps the Bulldogs in the top-seed position for the upcoming Southern Collegiate Athletics Conference Men's Basketball Championship, to be played Feb. 28-March 1 in Kerrville.

TLU, the defending conference champion, still has seven games remaining on the SCAC regular-season schedule. Saturday's Bulldog victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Mountaineers.

TLU improved to 11-7 overall and to 8-3 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs are a game-and-a-half ahead of Austin College in the race for the top seed. St. Thomas (Texas) leads the SCAC standings with a 10-1 conference mark, but the Celts are in transition to NCAA Division III and are currently ineligible for SCAC and NCAA DIII post-season tournaments. The Celts can win the SCAC regular-season championship, but they will not be in the tournament championship.

Schreiner fell to 6-11 overall and to 4-6 in the SCAC. The top six eligible teams make the SCAC post-season tournament. Schreiner currently sits in seventh.

Lister led TLU in the conference win with his 20 points, 13 rebounds and three assists. Eight of Lister's 13 total rebounds came on the offensive glass.

Lister was 7-for-16 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free throw line.

Andrade added 18 points, four rebounds and three steals. Andrade was 7-for-8 at the foul line.

Kite and Silas each scored 13. Silas collected seven rebounds, and Kite grabbed five boards.

TLU won despite shooting just 33.3 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from the three-point line. The Bulldogs went to the line 30 times and made 21 free throws.

TLU had an eight-point edge at the free throw line and a 24-9 advantage from the arc. Despite the 28.6 percent shooting from the three-point line, TLU made eight threes to Schreiner's three.

The Mountaineers were 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from the arc.

J'Sean Miller led Schreiner with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

The Bulldogs play a third-straight conference road game on Friday, Jan. 31 when they face Southwestern at 5:30 p.m. in Georgetown, Texas.
