Bio
Matt Gustafson enters his eighth season as a member of the Texas Lutheran football staff, serving as Assistant Head Coach and Running Backs Coach.
In 2024, Gustafson worked with a backfield that averaged 202.0 rushing yards (25th in Division-III) led by All-SCAC running backs Weston Guzman and Ryker Purdy. The 2024 team is just the fourth squad to average over 200 yards rushing in a season since 2000.
Gustafson previously coached baseball in the San Antonio area for 16 seasons starting in 1986. Gustafson coached both football and baseball at Marion, Uvalde, San Antonio Clark, San Antonio Churchill, and Smithson Valley High Schools during his time at the high school level.
Gustafson won 13 district championships, was a six-time regional finalist, and made it to the state tournament in 2001 with Smithson Valley. During that time period, Gustafson sent 102 players to play at the collegiate level. His overall record was 378-108-2 (.777) as a head coach.
Gustafson came out of retirement to join his brother, Carl, on TLU's football coaching staff where he has been a member since 2018.
In 2024, Gustafson was inducted into the San Antonio Area Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Honor where he joined his uncle, former University of Texas Baseball Coach, Cliff Gustafson in the Hall.
