Texas Lutheran's Juan Ocampo named First Team Academic All-American®
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Football place-kicker Juan Ocampo (Lockhart/Lockhart) has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® First Team for NCAA Division III Football.
Ocampo is the 48th Academic All-American® in school history and the 14th Bulldog to earn First Team Academic All-America® honors. He holds a 3.74 grade point average as a biochemistry major.
A junior academically for the 2020-21 school year, Ocampo is the third Academic All-American for TLU so far this year. TLU Men's Soccer players Mitchell Long (First Team) and Luis Green (Second Team) were named to the Academic All-America® Team for NCAA Division III Men's Soccer.
Ocampo is the 16th Academic All-American® for TLU in the past five years.
Among football players, Ocampo is the fourth Bulldog to claim Academic All-America® First Team honors for NCAA Division III Football. He is the eighth Bulldog football player in history to receive any Academic All-America® honor (First, Second, or Third Team).
Since 2000, TLU has produced the most Academic All-Americans of any NCAA Division III college or university in Texas. TLU ranks in the top 40 nationally among the 435 NCAA Division III colleges and universities for number of Academic All-Americans since 2000.
Earlier this week, Ocampo was named to the American Southwest Conference's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Football Team.
A 2020-21 First Team All-American (playing) as selected by D3football.com, Ocampo advanced to the Academic All-America® national ballot after being named a First Team Academic All-District® 8 selection.
TLU's Junior-Year Student-Athlete of the Year for his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom, Ocampo was a First Team All-Conference selection in the ASC for his play on the field this year.
In the 2020-21 football season that was shortened to five games and moved to the spring due to COVID-19, Ocampo led the ASC in total scoring and in kick scoring with 38 total points (7.6 points per game).
Ocampo claimed his second All-ASC First Team selection and his third overall selection to the All-ASC squad. The three-year starter missed one kick during the 2021 spring season. He was 7-for-8 in field goal attempts, with a long make of 44, and he was 17-for-17 on point-after attempts.
Sixteen of the 51 members of the 2020-21 Academic All-America® Division III Football teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with four student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 25 members of the first team combine for a 3.81 GPA.
The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.
