Texas Lutheran's Ocampo named to ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Football Team
SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran place-kicker Juan Ocampo (Lockhart/Lockhart) has been named to the American Southwest Conference's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Football Team.
Ocampo, a junior in the 2020-21 academic year, was TLU's representative among the honorees from the 10 football-playing schools in the ASC.
Ocampo holds a 3.74 grade point average as a biochemistry major.
The ASC names Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams for all of its sponsored sports. TLU plays in the ASC in football alone.
The Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams recognize student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team.
From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the sports information directors from the 12 ASC member institutions and three affiliate members select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
A 2020-21 First Team All-American as selected by D3football.com, Ocampo is on the national ballot to be an Academic All-American. He advanced to the Academic All-America national ballot after being named a First Team Academic All-District 8 selection.
TLU's Junior-Year Student-Athlete of the Year for his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom, Ocampo was a First Team All-Conference selection in the ASC for his play on the field this year.
In the 2020-21 football season that was shortened to five games and moved to the spring due to COVID-19, Ocampo led the ASC in total scoring and in kick scoring with 38 total points (7.6 points per game).
Ocampo claimed his second All-ASC First Team selection and his third overall selection to the All-ASC squad. The three-year starter missed one kick during the 2021 spring season. He was 7-for-8 in field goal attempts, with a long make of 44, and he was 17-for-17 on point-after attempts.
