Texas Lutheran's Ocampo, Perkins advance to Academic All-America ballot

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran junior place-kicker Juan Ocampo and senior receiver Mason Perkins were named to the 2020-21 Academic All-District® 8 Football Team for NCAA Division III and have advanced to the Academic All-America® national ballot.

The Academic All-District® Football Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Ocampo (Lockhart/Lockhart) and Perkins (Burleson/Arlington Martin) were named to the Academic All-District 8 First Team for the first time in their careers. District 8 includes student-athletes from college and universities in 21 states and Canada.

Ocampo holds a 3.74 grade point average as a biochemistry major. Perkins is scheduled to graduate this summer with his undergraduate degree in business administration and his master's degree in data analytics. Perkins holds a 3.46 undergraduate GPA and 3.40 GPA in graduate courses.

In the Bulldogs' spring football season of 2021, Ocampo claimed his second All-ASC First Team selection and his third overall selection to the All-ASC squad. The three-year starter missed one kick all season. He was 7-for-8 in field goal attempts, with a long make of 44, and he was 17-for-17 on point-after attempts.

Perkins claimed a Second Team All-ASC award as a receiver and a Third Team All-ASC honor as a return specialist. Perkins averaged 86.6 yards of receiving per game over the five-game season. He caught four touchdown passes and was named the ASC West Offensive Player of the Week after leading TLU to a comeback road win over Howard Payne. He also averaged 16.5 yards per punt return and had a long return of 66.

The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes football honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

First Team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot. First and Second Team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early July.

The Division II and III CoSIDA Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2020-21 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. The NAIA CoSIDA Academic All-America® program is partially financially supported through the NAIA national office.
