Baseball splits doubleheader with UMHB
BELTON, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball split a doubleheader against Mary Hardin-Baylor, winning the first game 10-3 in seven innings before dropping game two 15-0 in seven innings on Wednesday at Red Murff Field in Belton.
The Bulldogs (11-6, 5-4 SCAC) return to conference play with a doubleheader on Saturday as they travel to Irving to begin a three-game series against Dallas. Kash Durkin (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill) finished a double short of the cycle in Game 1, finishing 3-for-5 with a triple, a home run, and two RBI. With the home run, Durkin ties for the conference and national lead with seven on the season.
Isaiah Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall) started Game 1 and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on five hits in his first career start. Ramirez earned the win, his second of the season. Carson Hues (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) picked up the save, tossing 2.2 shutout innings of relief while striking out four.
Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) launched the Bulldogs into the lead with a leadoff home run in the first inning. Aidan Spires (Fort Worth/Arlington Heights) added a run in the second inning, scoring on a UMHB error.
The Crusaders scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead, 3-2, before Kash Durkin would score another unearned run on the Crusaders second error of the day to tie the game at three.
Freshman Cooper Jen (Kyle/Hays) hit his first career home run to lead off the fourth inning before tacking on another run in the fifth following a two-out triple from Spires and a UMHB error following a shot by Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) to left field.
TLU would hit two two-run home runs in the sixth with Durkin and Tyler Helpenstill (Pearland/Lutheran South) both leaving the yard in the inning. An RBI double from Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) in the seventh brought the game to its final score of 10-3.
In Game 2, UMHB scored early and rolled to a 15-0 run-rule win over the Bulldogs. The Crusaders scored five runs in the first to go up 5-0. The Crusaders continued their offensive barrage, scoring five more runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to go up 14-0. UMHB scored another run in the sixth to make it 15-0.
Jeremy Kennard (Frisco/Frisco Lone Star) made his debut on the mound, pitching two innings in relief.
