Baseball Drops Doubleheader to No. 15/17 Trinity
SEGUIN, Texas --#RV Texas Lutheran Baseball dropped the series opening doubleheader to No. 15/17 Trinity by scores of 21-7 and 6-5 Sunday night at Katt-Isbel Field.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-2 SCAC) will look to bounce back and avoid the sweep on Monday at 7 PM at Katt-Isbel Field. The game will be streamed on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
In game one, Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the first, but the game got out of hand in the third as the rival Tigers scored 10 runs on 10 hits and two errors in an inning that saw five Trinity extra base hits.
The deficit grew to 19-0 in the fifth before Texas Lutheran responded with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs scored the seven runs on three hits, five walks, and two Trinity errors. Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) and Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) drove in two runs each in the inning.
The Tigers got two runs back in the seventh to bring the game to its final score of 21-7 in seven innings.
Texas Lutheran held a 5-2 lead in game two before Trinity scored four runs in the ninth to beat the Bulldogs 6-5 in the back end of the doubleheader.
TLU held a 5-2 lead going into the ninth inning when Trinity scored four runs off Carson Hues (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) and Brayden Sprencel (Robstown/Calallen) with Sprencel being charged with the loss.
Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) started and pitched seven innings with 10 strikeouts. He allowed two runs on five hits and five walks and did not factor in the decision.
Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) went 1-for-4 with two runs scored while Brayden Sprencel went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Texas Lutheran came out swinging in game one, scoring three runs on three hits in the first inning. A bunt single from Caleb Small (Round Rock/Gateway College Preparatory), a double from Bourgeois, and a walk to Kash Durkin (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill) loaded the bases for an RBI fielder's choice for Tyler Helpenstill (Pearland/Lutheran South). Sprencel would follow with a two-RBI double to clear the bases and give TLU an early 3-0 lead. TLU scored an unearned run in the third to increase their lead to 4-0.
Trinity got one run back in the fourth via a sacrifice fly and added another via an RBI groundout in the seventh. Texas Lutheran responded with another unearned run in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
Trinity answered with four runs on three hits in the ninth inning before shutting the door on the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning.
