TLU Baseball Walks Off for Sweep of Schreiner

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran picked up its second and third straight walk-off wins - both of different varieties - beating Schreiner 11-1 in seven innings in game two and 8-7 in 11 innings to complete the sweep of the Mountaineers on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field. With the wins, TLU extends its current win streak to seven games.

In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Bulldogs (18-11, 7-5 SCAC) scored 11 runs on seven hits. Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) was 1-for-2 with two walks and three RBIs.

JT Taylor (Conroe/Fort Bend Christian) pitched six innings and allowed just one run on six hits and four walks. He struck out four batters and picked up his fourth win of the season.

Schreiner scored the first run of the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the second.

Texas Lutheran responded with a solo home run of their own in the bottom of the third from Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty). In total, TLU would score four runs on two hits in the third. After loading the bases, a bases loaded walk to Xavier Arias would give the Bulldogs the lead. Sacrifice flies from Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) and Carson Draehn (Brenham/Brenham) gave the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. A Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) RBI single and a two-RBI triple from Arias in the fourth gave the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead.

Texas Lutheran scored two more runs on two hits in the sixth to extend the lead out to 9-1. Goudeau started the inning with a hit by pitch and scored on an RBI single from Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis). Adam Peavy tacked on another run with an RBI single to drive in Kesselring.

Mason Goudeau would score on a balk to start the scoring in the seventh before Kesselring would walk it off with an RBI single to score Chance Greene and bring the game to its final score of 11-1.

In the series finale, the two teams went into extras for the second time in three games when Garrett Helpenstill (Pearland/Lutheran South) stepped to the plate and hit a pinch-hit, bases loaded single to center field to walk it off for the Bulldogs in his lone at-bat on the weekend.

Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) picked up the win in relief, improving to 3-3 on the season, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out two batters.

Aric Vasquez went 4-for-6 at the plate in the finale with three RBIs. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) finished 3-for-5 with a walk, an RBI, and two runs scored, while Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) went 3-for-6.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) got the start and earned a no-decision - pitching 5.2 innings - allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks while striking out four.

Texas Lutheran took a 1-0 lead following a first inning RBI double from Adam Peavy.

Schreiner would take a 2-1 in the third, taking advantage of three free passes in the inning.

A bases clearing, three-RBI double from Vasquez gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead in the fourth. Tyler Post added a run in the fifth inning with an RBI single before the Bulldogs would tack on their second run of the inning following a Schreiner error.

The Mountaineers scored two runs in the sixth to cut the Bulldogs lead to 6-4.

TLU got one run back in the seventh courtesy of a Chance Greene sacrifice fly to make the score 7-4.

Schreiner put together a three-run eighth inning to knot the game up at 7-7 in the top of the eighth, which is where the score would remain until Helpenstill's walk off.

Texas Lutheran will head on the road to San Antonio to renew its rivalry with No. 16 Trinity starting Friday at 6 PM at Trinity Baseball Field. All games will be streamed on Trinity's Tiger Network. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
