TLU Baseball Completes Sweep of Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball outscored the Austin College 'Roos by a combined score of 24-1 on Saturday to complete the sweep at Baker Field in Sherman. Texas Lutheran (15-11, 4-5 SCAC) won by a dominant score of 15-0 in seven innings in game one and followed with a 9-1 win in the series finale.

Diego Vinton (Richmond/George Ranch) won his second straight start on the mound, tossing a seven inning, complete game shutout with three strikeouts, a walk, and four hits allowed to secure the win. The complete game and shutout were the first in his career.

Xavier Arias (La Vernia/Nixon-Smiley) went 3-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored, two walks, two stolen bases, and four RBI. Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Hayden Kesselring (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) finished 2-for-6 with two stolen bases and three runs scored. Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) went 1-for-5 with two RBIs while Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson) went 1-for-5 with a solo home run.

An RBI single from Xavier Arias broke a scoreless tie in the third inning.

A Tyler Post solo home run doubled the Bulldogs lead in the fourth.

The Bulldogs would extend their lead to 5-0 in the fifth behind an RBI double from Arias and a two-RBI single from Chase Bourgeois.

Texas Lutheran added two more runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Adam Peavy.

Texas Lutheran made a complete trip through the line up and then some in the seventh, scoring eight runs on five hits, two hit by pitches, and two errors to increase their lead to 15-0.

Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/McCollum) was brilliant in game two, pitching seven shutout innings and striking out four batters to pick up his third win of the season. 

Hayden Kesselring went 4-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI and Xavier Arias was 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and an RBI. Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double and two runs scored.

Both teams remained scoreless their first trips through the lineup before Texas Lutheran opened the scoring with a Tyler Post sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Hayden Kesselring would score on an Austin College error to double the Bulldogs lead to 2-0.

TLU would score three runs on three hits and an error in the seventh. An RBI double from Chance Greene and an RBI single from Kesselring increased the TLU lead to 4-0. A throwing error following Xavier Arias's third stolen base of the day led to Kesselring scoring an unearned run to make the score 5-0.

The Bulldogs would add three more runs in the eighth behind a two-RBI single from Kesselring and an RBI single from Arias.

Austin College avoided a second straight shutout by scoring a run in the eighth inning. Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) would come out of the bullpen and allow that lone run on four hits over the final two innings.

The Bulldogs would score their final run on the day courtesy of a bases loaded hit by pitch to Ryan Botello (Edinburg/Robert Vela). The RBI is the first of the freshman's collegiate career.
