Texas Lutheran Splits Doubleheader with UT-Dallas, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran earned a split of their Saturday doubleheader against 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier, UT-Dallas, and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field - run-ruling the Comets in Game One, 13-3 in seven innings, before dropping Game Two to the Stags 12-2 in eight innings.

In Game One, a five-run third inning, six-run seventh inning, and 13 total runs ended TLU's losing streak at four games and earned a weekend split with the Comets.

Payton Dahl (Round Rock/Cedar Ridge) got the scoring started in the second inning - driving in Randy Huerta (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) to give TLU a 1-0 lead.

UTD tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third before TLU struck for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Tyler Post (San Antonio/Johnson), Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis), Kyle Gates (La Vernia/La Vernia), Randy Huerta, and Niko Garcia (Houston/Langham Creek) all drove in runs in the inning as TLU took a 6-1 lead. A Tyler Post RBI double down the right field line in the fourth inning would add an extra run to the Bulldog lead in the fourth inning.

The Comets would scratch across runs in the fifth and sixth innings to shrink the TLU lead to 7-3 before a monster seventh inning saw the Bulldogs score six runs on four hits to bring the game to a run-rule finish with a two RBI triple from Tyler Post bringing the game to its end.

JT Taylor (Houston/Fort Bend Christian) picked up the win for Texas Lutheran, his first of the season, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out one UTD batter.

In Game Two, Wade Tittle (Caldwell/Caldwell) would give TLU an early 1-0 lead via a solo home run, but the Bulldogs would ultimately fall 12-2 as the Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth for the eight inning run-rule victory. Freshman Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls), who made his TLU varsity debut Saturday, drove in the only other TLU run Saturday night.

Zach Longshore (Houston/Fort Bend Travis) got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and would allow five runs (two earned) on eight hits over five innings of work.

Up next, Texas Lutheran will conclude its four home game weekend on Sunday at 12 PM - concluding its series against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. All streaming and stat links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
