Texas Lutheran's late-inning rally falls short against PSU-Harrisburg in NCAA regional

WHITEWATER, Wis. -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs nearly crawled out of an early five-run deficit but could not overcome some key mistakes in a 6-4 NCAA tournament loss to Penn State-Harrisburg.

Friday afternoon at the NCAA Division III Whitewater, Wis. Regional, TLU pulled within a run with a three-run seventh and had the tying run at second base in the inning. In the ninth, TLU put two on and brought the winning run to the plate. The Lions made a diving defensive stop at first to end the game.

The Bulldogs committed three fielding errors. Four of the six PSU-Harrisburg runs were unearned.

TLU fell to 28-13 overall and will play for its NCAA tournament life tonight against top-seed Adrian College (Mich.). In the regional's double-elimination bracket, the loser of game three (the TLU-PSUH game) plays the winner of game one (Adrian). The Adrian Bulldogs defeated No. 6 seed Salem State 2-0 on Thursday.

The TLU v. Adrian game is scheduled to begin around 7 p.m. tonight. All games of the Whitewater Regional are played at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium.

PSU-Harrisburg (29-7) will face No. 2 seed and host UW-Whitewater on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions received a three-run triple in the fourth inning from Chase Smith and a two-run single from Bret Williams in the second.

Ryan Maddux drove in a run in the ninth with a sacrifice fly.

Brendan Beard pitched well in relief for TLU. The redshirt freshman right-hander struck out eight and did not allow an earned run. He went 6-1/3 innings.

Cullen Motsinger was 2-for-4 and had two RBI for TLU. Randy Huerta also had a pair of hits and scored a run.

Collin Docker and Caleb Maly each had RBI singles.
