CLEBURNE, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs moved to the winner's bracket of the 2021 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a 7-5 victory Friday evening against Southwestern.
TLU, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, will face the top-seed, Trinity, at noon Saturday at The Depot at Cleburne, Stadion. Trinity defeated Centenary (La.) 9-7 in the opening game of the tournament.
TLU improved to 26-11 with the victory. Southwestern, the No. 3 seed, dropped to 18-18.
Friday at The Depot, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-0 lead against the Pirates.
Caleb Maly scored on a passed ball in the first, and then TLU put up four runs in the second.
Cullen Motsinger drew a bases-loaded walk in the second to score Simon Scales, and Austin Colon brought home runs two and three of the inning with a double to right-center field.
Tyler Post collected the final RBI of the second when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Southwestern cut the TLU lead down to 5-4 with three runs in the fourth, but TLU pushed the lead up to 7-4 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Joe Jimenez tripled to left field to score Colon, and Jimenez came home on a Post sacrifice fly.
TLU's Brendan Beard improved to 3-2 on the year with four innings of strong relief. Beard struck out five and did not issue a walk. He allowed one earned run and four hits.
Blade Strzelczyk worked a perfect ninth inning to notch his second save of the year. He struck out one.
Maly scored a pair of runs for TLU, and Colon went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Scales was 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Tyler Cauley walked three times.
