Texas Lutheran sweeps road doubleheader from No. 20 Centenary with 14-4, 8-4 victories

SHREVEPORT, La. -- Texas Lutheran swept a road doubleheader Saturday from No. 20 Centenary College with 14-4 and 8-4 wins at the Gents' Shehee Stadium.
 
TLU goes into next weekend's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with an overall record of 25-11 and a final conference regular-season mark of 15-3.
 
Centenary dropped to 30-9 overall and to 14-7 in the SCAC.
 
The Bulldogs are a few percentage points behind Trinity for the top spot (and regular-season title) in the SCAC standings. TLU could still secure the top seed in the conference tournament. Trinity plays a conference doubleheader at Southwestern on Sunday. The first game of TU-SU series was cancelled due to weather.
 
TLU can do no worse than the No. 2 seed for the tournament. Southwestern and Centenary are in a battle for the No. 3 seed, but all four schools (TLU, Trinity, Southwestern, and Centenary) have already secured spots in the conference tournament. Seeding is still a work in progress. The tournament will be played this coming Friday through Sunday at The Depot at Cleburne Station in Cleburne, Texas.
 
In the Bulldogs' 14-4 win over Centenary, Austin Colon registered four hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. He singled to right in the third inning to score Cullen Motsinger and tie the game at 3-3. Colon added a two-run single in the ninth.
 
Colon scored in the third on a two-run home run from Tyler Cauley, who was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Alex Cornman and Tyler Post each had two RBI in the first game, and five different Bulldogs scored at least two runs.
 
Right-hander Joe Burch improved to 6-1 overall with 6-1/3 innings of work. He allowed two earned runs, struck out one, and walked one. Matthew Hickey tossed the final 2-2/3 and did not allow an earned run.
 
In the late game, TLU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings. Colon singled up the middle to score Motsinger in the first.
 
In the four-run second, Caleb Maly, Motsinger, Colon, and Joe Jimenez each recorded RBI. Maly had a sacrifice fly. Motsinger singled to right. Colon had a ground ball RBI, and Jimenez drove in a run with a fielder's choice.
 
Cauley hit his second home run of the day in the fourth. It was a two-run shot that scored Maly and pushed TLU to 7-0 lead. Cauley now has 40 career home runs and 
 
After Centenary closed the gap with a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth, TLU added an insurance run in the sixth with a sacrifice bunt RBI from Motsinger that scored Collin Docker.
 
Nolan Tenpas notched his third pitching win of the season with 1-1/3 innings of relief work. Tenpas (3-1) struck out one, walked one, and allowed one run. Blade Strzelczyk pitched a scoreless ninth. He allowed one hit.
