Texas Lutheran knocks off top-ranked Trinity 2-1 in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs knocked off the top-ranked team in NCAA Division III, Trinity University, on Tuesday night in a 2-1 non-conference road victory for the Bulldogs.
Randy Huerta, the reigning Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week, hit a go-ahead solo home run in the sixth inning. The home run to left-center proved to be the game-winner.
For Huerta, the Bulldogs' starting third baseman, the homer was his fifth in the last five games. He has eight in the 2021 season.
Zach Perry (1-1) tossed 2-1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win. He struck out four.
Blade Strzelczyk pitched a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the year.
The Bulldogs, the 2018 national runner-up in D3, improved to 23-10 overall.
Trinity, the 2016 D3 national champion, dropped to 25-5.
Joe Jimenez gave TLU a 1-0 lead in the first with a sacrifice fly that scored Cullen Motsinger.
Brian Schaub tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly.
TLU pitching held the Tigers scoreless over the final eight innings.
First-year pitcher Jonathan Hampton started for TLU. He went 3-2/3 innings and allowed just one run.
TLU returns to conference play in the SCAC with a three-game road series at Centenary (La.) in Shreveport. The series starts Friday with a single game and concludes Saturday with a doubleheader.
The series is the last regular-season series for TLU before the SCAC Baseball Championship in Cleburne, Texas May 7-9.
