A 1939 junior college class member, Vernette played both forward on the basketball team which played in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation State Tournament both years, and placed fourth in 1938. She was on the all-tournament second team. She was also second in tennis singles in 1938 and 1939, and teamed with Lillie Lenhoff in the junior college doubles.
