TLU Volleyball Sweeps St. Thomas

HOUSTON, Texas -- Texas Lutheran volleyball swept St. Thomas, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18 in the first of two matches between the teams this season on Saturday at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center on the campus of University of St. Thomas.

The Bulldogs will square off against Hardin-Simmons at 3 PM on Wednesday in San Antonio on the campus of Trinity University in non-conference action. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) led all players with nine kills and added two blocks. Brylie Nedd (Sealy/Sealy) and Emily Mixon (Woodville/Woodville) finished with eight kills and a block each.

Victoria Powell (Richmond/Fulshear) had seven kills on just 11 swings - hitting a team-high .636 - and added two blocks. Keriann Kallus (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) led the team with three blocks and a career-high four aces.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) finished with a team-high 16 assists and 20 digs for her ninth consecutive double-double and 13th in 15 matches.

Faith Coldewey (Floresville/Floresville) led the team with 24 digs and added three assists and two digs, while Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) had a double-double with 15 digs and 15 assists. Richelle Guerra (Brownsville/Rivera Early College) finished a dig shy of matching her career-high with 14 digs on the night. Entering the weekend, Texas Lutheran ranked ninth in NCAA Division-III in digs per set - averaging 19.58 per set.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the opening set and despite three ties never relinquished the lead - leading by as many as seven points - closing the set with a 25-21 win.

The teams went back-and-forth throughout the beginning of the second set before a 7-1 run gave the Bulldogs a 17-11 lead. The Celts would fight back into the set but the Bulldogs would put it away, 25-22.

Texas Lutheran cruised to a 25-18 win in the final set, holding the Celts to a .107 hitting percentage to close out the sweep.
