Bulldogs Sweep Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, CA -- Texas Lutheran volleyball picked up its second win of the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational, sweeping host Cal Lutheran, 25-20, 26-24, 26-24, Friday night in the Regals home opener in Gilbert Arena in Thousand Oaks, California. The win is the first in program history over the Regals.

The Bulldogs (6-2) will conclude the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational on Saturday with matches against Chapman and No. 24 La Verne at 3 & 9 PM CST. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.

Shavonne Respondek (San Antonio/Madison) led the Bulldogs with 11 kills, matching her career-high also against Cal Lutheran in 2021, while Tanyse Moehrig (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) finished with nine kills. Victoria Powell (Richmond/Fulshear) started and had seven kills and a team-high three blocks.

Respondek was a standout, recording her first career triple double with 11 kills, 14 assists, and 10 digs.

Julia Chew (Cypress/Cy-Fair) dished out 17 assists, seven digs and two aces. Faith Coldewey (Floresville/Floresville) had a team-high 20 digs and four aces in addition to five assists.

Texas Lutheran took a 1-0 lead in the match, winning the opening set 25-20, with Moehrig and Respondek leading the way with three kills each. The set was tied 20-20 before the Bulldogs closed with a 5-0 run to close the set.

The second set was tight throughout with the Bulldogs down 24-22 for set point before rallying for a 26-24 win to close it out. Six kills from Respondek and three aces from Coldewey swung the set, including two kills from Respondek in the final 5-0 run.

The third set emulated the second set as it remained tight throughout as the Gilbert Arena crowd attempted to rally around their home team to avoid the sweep in their home opener. TLU had match point with a 24-19 lead before the Regals rallied to tie the set 24-24, but the Bulldogs were able to close it out 26-24 for the sweep. Tanyse Moehrig dominated the final set with five kills.
